Hit-And-Run Kills Man Outside Alice Griffith Housing

A 59-year-old man left in the middle of the street from hit-and-run earlier this month has died, police said Thursday.

Bruce Romans was found on Carroll Avenue and Arelious Walker Drive, where Bayview public housing project Alice Griffith Apartments sits, just a few minutes before midnight on Aug. 4. He was taken to the hospital and died on Aug. 8, according to the Medical Examiner’s office.

Romans is one of 23 people to die a traffic-related death on San Francisco streets in 2019 so far by SF Weekly‘s count — a number that now matches such deaths in all of 2018 and that matches this year’s homicide count. The city has a goal to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2024, known as Vision Zero.

Police are looking for the driver but don’t have many clues for the public. It wasn’t until after Romans died that the Medical Examiner’s office determined his injuries were consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

Investigators are seeking the help of anyone who may have seen Romans, described as weighing 153 pounds, being 5 feet 8 inches tall, and wearing a dark jacket and blue jeans when he was hit. They’re also on the lookout for recollections of an erratic driver or vehicle with body damage.

Anyone with information is urged to call the 24-hour tip line at 415-575-444 or text ‘SFPD’ to TIP411 and may remain anonymous.

This article has been updated to reflect SFMTA’s latest Vision Zero count.
