In the Aquatic Park area that likely sends shivers down Buster Bluth’s spine, a swimmer has apparently been seriously injured by a seal or sea lion, police say Thursday.

This afternoon, the San Francisco Police Department’s marine unit pulled out a swimmer with serious injuries from the San Francisco Bay. Medics at Pier 45 applied a tourniquet to the adult victim and sent them to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital

It is unusual for emergency responders to get this type of incident in the Bay, San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Baxter says. Fortunately for the victim, officers on the marine unit were recently certified as EMTs and added tourniquets to their trauma kits.

The victim’s vital signs were reported as stable, Baxter says. They are not expected to have hook hands.

UPDATE, 12/15: A second attack has taken place, and Aquatic Park is closed until Monday.
