Man Killed By Mercedes Driver in North Beach

A driver fatally struck a man in or near a North Beach parking garage Wednesday morning, according to police.

As rush hour commenced around 7 a.m., a driver on the block on Greenwich Street near Columbus Avenue struck and killed. Medics rushed to the scene and declared 48-year-old Jonathan Jones — identified by the Medical Examiner’s office — deceased.

An officer on the scene confirmed to the Examiner that a black Mercedes was involved, but police spokesperson Officer Robert Rueca said it’s still under investigation. The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with police.

Rueca would also not confirm if the incident happened in the parking garage, which contributed to some media outlets reporting that Jones was facing homelessness and sleeping in the garage at the time. Jones has no known city of residence.

It wouldn’t be the only time a driver in San Francisco has run over someone looking for a place to sleep. In December 2014, a driver leaving a parking garage on Third and South Park streets in SoMa ran over 53-year-old Randy Jacobs, who fell asleep in the driveway.

And in October 2012, a 28-year-old woman on Third Street drove over 55-year-old Elvis Presley, who also fell asleep in a driveway.
