A man was found guilty on Wednesday of robbing and assaulting a nanny in front of an eight-month-old baby, the District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.

Around noon on Oct. 4, Ronald D. Mitchell approached Michelle Maness while she pushed an eight-month-old baby in a stroller, according to court records. When Mitchell took the 26-year-old’s phone near 19th Avenue and Lincoln Way, she yelled for help.

The 43-year-old then grabbed Maness by the arm and threw her to the ground. After bystanders asked Mitchell to leave, he threw the phone to the ground and smashed it.

Maness grabbed her phone and retreated to a gas station nearby with the baby, where Mitchell picked up a gas station fill cover. He held it over his head, violently yelled at a station employee and others and walked toward 18th Avenue.

Police arrested Mitchell shortly after and Maness identified him, according to the District Attorney’s Office. On Wednesday, a jury found 43-year-old Ronald D. Mitchell guilty of second-degree robbery and assault.

“It is reprehensible that the defendant chose such a vulnerable set of victims,” says Assistant District Attorney Dane Reinstedt in a statement. “I hope that Ms. Maness and the infant’s family find some solace in this verdict.”
