An unknown man with a hatchet attacked another man in the Tenderloin, sending the victim to the hospital with life-threatening injuries early Wednesday morning.

The 38-year-old victim was walking home on Golden Gate Avenue and Jones Street around 1 a.m. when another man approached him and yelled unknown words, says police spokesperson Officer Robert Rueca. The suspect struck the victim with a hatchet in the upper torso area and ran off.

Police report no arrests but were able to find the hatchet with evidence linking it to the incident. (Axes are larger and for chopping while hatchets are smaller and handheld.)

The victim is still recovering in the hospital as of late Wednesday morning, police say.
