Outer Sunset Driver Kills Elderly Pedestrian

Update, July 18, 9 a.m.: Authorities report the pedestrian has died from his injuries.

A driver sent an elderly pedestrian to the hospital with critical injuries after striking him in the Outer Sunset on Tuesday morning, police said.

Just past 10 a.m., the driver hit an elderly man at Sloat Boulevard and 36th Avenue, near Lake Merced. The man is en route to the hospital with life-threatening conditions, according to police spokesperson Officer Joseph Tomlinson.

Officers stayed on the scene for another hour to clear the area. No other details were immediately available.

In October 2017, a 45-year-old man walking across the same intersection of Sloat Boulevard and 36th Avenue was fatally struck by a driver. At least five pedestrians in the past 10 years have been killed on Sloat Boulevard.

The city recently installed “bulb-outs” at the same intersection, which extends the curb to bolster pedestrian safety.

This is a breaking news story. Check again for updates.
