Semen-Tainted Flutes Rumored in California Schools

We’ve heard the term ‘skin flute,’ but this is ridiculous and affects students in at least 13 school districts in the state.

It’s tough to imagine a more sour note than what California parents are hearing from many school districts, as it appears that flutes distributed to elementary school children were stained with human sperm. The Orange County Register reports that flutes stained with semen were distributed to schoolkids in at least 13 districts by a performer with a group called Flutes Across the World — whose website, not surprisingly, has been taken offline.

“The performer distributes a flute-like musical instrument made of PVC pipe or bamboo to students during a music lesson, and the allegation is that he contaminated some of these instruments with semen,” Saugus Union School District superintendent Joan Lucid said in a statement to the Orange County Register.

Before flute enthusiasts pick a low blow to complain about, we should point out these “flutes” were not technically flutes in the proper sense. They were painted, flutophone style instruments used to teach basic instrumental skills to very young elementary students, as seen in this image from the Saugus Union School District.

But that makes it even worse, particularly for the parents of the affected kids. “It’s disgusting, it’s unreal, you can’t even really fathom it,” one unidentified parent told NBC Los Angeles. “It made me sick to my stomach.”

All of the affected schools are in the southern California area. According to NBC 4, the teacher has been arrested.
