Dozens of San Francisco Police Department vehicles sped down streets in the Mission District late last night, after an armed robbery turned into a shootout, and left one person dead.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., two victims of an armed robbery flagged down a cop car near 20th and Capp streets. SFPD took a description of the vehicle — a black Honda Civic — and quickly located it quickly on Capp between 21st and 22nd streets.

According to SFPD, things started fairly smoothly — they ordered the driver out of the car, and they complied and were detained. But it was when they spotted a second suspect in the trunk of the car, which was left slightly ajar, that things turned violent.

“While attempting to detain the second suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” says SFPD.

third suspect was taken from the vehicle and detained, and only then did officers take the shooting victim out of the trunk, and administer aid. An ambulance was called, but the person was declared dead at the scene.

SFPD says a handgun was located in the trunk of the vehicle.

No information about the victim’s gender, race, or age has been released yet. Separate investigations are being conducted by the SFPD Homicide Detail, the San Francisco District Attorneys’ Office Independent Investigation Bureau, the San Francisco Department of Police Accountability, the SFPD Internal Affairs Division and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

As is customary, a town hall meeting will be held to go over the details of the shooting within ten days. We’ll keep you updated.
