Bizarre Crimes of the Week: News Thieves, Sword Stabbing, Pellet Gun Sniper

San Francisco sees it’s fair share of crime — some serious, some less so. Here at SF Weekly, we’re paying attention to all of it — from the mundane to the bizarre. Here’s a roundup of some of the weirder situations that went down in our 49 square miles this week:

Mail Delivery Road Rage
On Thursday evening at 6 p.m., a mail delivery man was double-parked while he dropped off mail on Divisadero Street in the Marina District. An angry driver pulled up behind his vehicle and began honking the horn in his car. The driver, a man in his 40s, then exited the car and began beating up the mail delivery man. Police arrived on the scene and placed the suspect in custody. The mailman was transported to the hospital.

Flaming Van
On Tuesday morning a man hopped out of his van at 22nd Avenue and Fulton Street in the Richmond, and the van burst into flames. The situation is under investigation.

A Need For News
Shortly after noon on April 2 two women stole newspapers from a stand on the 2500 block of San Bruno Avenue. When the shopkeeper confronted them, he was pepper sprayed in the face. Police responded to the scene, but no arrests were made.

Small Fire Alert
A man staring at a small fire on a loading dock in Potrero Hill caught the attention of a passerby on Saturday afternoon, who called the police. The man walked away from the scene before SFPD and the Fire Department arrived. A vehicle was apparently destroyed in the blaze.

Swords Are Sharp
Last Friday night two friends “wrestling/playing” with a sword in North Beach got themselves in trouble when one ended up with a number of stab wounds. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and his playmate, a 40-year-old man, was arrested.

Do You Want a Bag With That?
Possibly the easiest bank robbery ever to go down took place in Chinatown on Saturday afternoon. A man in his 30s walked into a bank on the 1100 block of Grant Avenue (most likely the Wells Fargo as it’s the only bank on that block). He placed a few plastic bags on the front of the counter in front of two tellers. No words were exchanged, and the two women working took money from their drawers and placed it in the bags. The suspect then fled the scene on foot. No arrest was made.

Pellet Sniper
On Saturday evening a 31-year-old man was arrested after shooting passersby from the rooftop of a building on Larkin Street, in the Tenderloin. Police were called to the scene after a 41-year-old man was shot in the leg. The suspect was arrested, and the victim was transported to the hospital.
