Market Street was shut down between Fifth and Sixth streets as officers investigated a shooting that took place shortly before noon on Wednesday afternoon.

According to San Francisco Police Department Police Chief William Scott, two police officers walking their beat along Market Street encountered an adult white man in the act of stabbing an adult man of Filipino descent. The officers intervened, and at least one discharged a firearm, hitting the suspect.

The stabbing victim was transported to the hospital, and an update was not immediately available on his condition.

Despite life-saving efforts, the suspect in the case died at the scene.

“A loss of life is tragic,” Scott told the media during a press briefing. “It doesn’t matter how it happened, it’s tragic. These things — we try to avoid them as much as we can, but we do have an obligation to protect the public.”

SFPD states that an investigation is underway, with the Department of Police Accountability, San Francisco District Attorney’s Office Independent Investigation Bureau, and the Medical Examiner’s Office. “This process is a long process and a very thorough process,” Scott said.

Update, May 4, 11 a.m.: The name of the suspect killed by police has been released. Nicholas Flusche, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene. A GoFundMe page appears to have been founded by his family.

The stabbing victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
