A late-night fire at a large apartment complex on the corner of Hayes and Baker streets has displaced 18 people and several pets.

The San Francisco Fire Department first arrived on the scene at 372 Baker St. at 11 p.m. Thursday night. But firemen could still be seen rolling up their hoses as late as 6 a.m. this morning, according to one neighbor.

The corner is still closed off with caution tape, and a pile of burned debris sits on the sidewalk along Baker Street.

At 9 a.m., firemen were still at the scene, crowbarring open one of the building’s entrances to further examine the interior space. A large piece of the roof has been ripped open, and is visible from the street.
