Under One Roof: Popular Castro Nonprofit Pushed Out by High Rent

On July 31, the community store Under One Roof will close its doors after 23 years in the Castro. The iconic nonprofit has raised untold amounts of money for a variety of HIV and LGBT beneficiaries, including the AIDS Housing Alliance, Project Open Hand, and Shanti.

“The key decision factor in closing the organization is the expensive rent in the Castro District, which is where we experience the strongest sales” said Tim Smith, chairman of Under One Roof. “We are a non-profit retail organization and the overhead simply prevents us from achieving our goals.”
