An off-duty Richmond police officer was shot and killed in his Vallejo home by the father of his 6-year-old grandson, who is now in custody, according to reports.
Gus Vegas, 58, was asleep in his home in Vallejo's Glen Cove neighborhood early Thursday when he was awakened by an argument between his daughter and Robert Vega, the father of the 6-year-old, according to the Contra Costa Times.
Vegas, a 15-year veteran of the force, apparently tried to intervene but was shot “multiple times” by Vega, who then took the 6-year-old and fled, according to police. Vega has since been arrested.
[jump] There's no word on what exactly caused the argument, but Vega will likely face homicide and kidnapping charges, according to reports. Since he killed a cop — despite the fact that it was a cop who was not on duty — charges could be harsh, indeed.
Vegas served as a patrol officer, homicide detective, and was most recently working in the RPD's “regulatory unit,” according to the Times.
