I imagine that being a one-man band is pretty sweet in a lot of ways. You never have to argue with your bandmates about what a song should sound like. You can practice and record whenever you want. And when you play a show or sell a CD, you pocket all the money. But then what happens when you have a really well produced stu

Weekend recap by Janine KahnThe bad news is, it's Monday. The good news? This is bound to be one short week! All Shook Down will likely be mostly crickets and echoes this Thursday and Friday as our crew heads out to spend time with their respective clans, so we overdid it this past weekend to make it up to you in advance. • "Still a Little Magic" by Miss Van at Fifty24SF

From Barcelona, Spain by way of Toulousse, France, Miss Van brings her iconic images of "poupees," -- dolls with wide eyes and luscious curves -- to our very own Fifty24SF Gallery this winter. Miss Van's latest solo showing, Still a Little Magic, presents a collection of her trademark poupee imagery made famous on the streets of Europe, and also exlpores the world of theater and charade under the big top tents. Still a Little Magic opens with a reception Dec. 4 from 7-9:30 p.m., and will remain

  • Track of the Day: Filastine

"Singularities" by Barcelona-based globetripper Filastine is an evocative track, stirring up cinematic images of emotional worlds crashing to a disastrous, beautiful collapse. There's an evil edge to the stuttered string samples and scattering beats in the song, similar to the soundtrack Kronos Quartet composed for Requiem For A Dream but much more schizophrenic. It's a richly textured tune, much like the rest of the electronic composer's catalog--which tours through the Balkans, Latin America,

  • Early Bird Special: Contigo

Jen SiskaContigoAfter scarfing pork-belly bocaditos and octopus salad at Contigo in Noe Valley, SF Weekly food critic Matthew Stafford gets all dreamy thinking about the vacay he took in Barcelona. Stafford thinks chef-owner Brett Emerson gets all the details right in this local simulacrum of the Catalan tapas bar. Drool over the full review later today at sfweekly.com. Meantime, here's a taste: The similarities between the Bay Area and Catalonia are striking. Both regions have a fierce independ

  • I Heart Street Art: Valencia Trip

A couple weeks ago I was walking around Valencia, Spain, looking for street art, when I came across an ancient Roman bridge with graffiti all over it.  First it struck me as offensive, like who would dare deface something so old and hallowed?  But then I started thinking about the epicness of it. It's a juxtaposition we'll just never see here in the new world -- contemporary street art on a thousand-year-old structure. Moreover, it's everlasting vs. everlasting! Everlasting Roman

  • I Heart Street Art: Green Thumb

As you know, I've taken a number of trips in recent weeks. Valencia, Barcelona, Berlin, Memphis. But none so foreign a destination as Sunnyside. Sunnyside is a sunny San Francisco neighborhood somewhere between Glen Park and City College -- clean, quiet, residential. Not a lot of street art. Except for this lone hidden gem by D-Know.

  • Hey DJ! Friday Q&A: Nisus

There are DJs who log a lotta miles, and then there's Nisus. While other vinyl slingers rack up passenger time on airlines, this guy has spent the summer getting between gigs in Germany, France, Spain, and Switzerland by bike. Overall he  traveled, (two wheel-style), across 1,300 miles, and still had the energy to spin at various gigs in little discos along the way. Tonight marks this homecoming for this Blasthaus/Solid Gold Jacuzzi/Look Out Weekend regular, and he'll be spinning as one

    K. Todd Storch/FlickrBelden Alley: S.F.'s urban Epcot now has an American place. An early nibble of the Weekly's Wednesday food review. Like some urban, particularly fragrant Epcot Center, Belden Alley has long offered the city a taste of global cuisines. Well, recognizably Euro cuisines, what with Plouf and Café Bastille, Café Tiramisu, and the Barcelona copycat B44. But where the vodka bar Voda once offered a taste of, well, Vegas, stands Trademark (56 Belden at Pine), a restaurant d

  • Congratulations, San Francisco -- Tens of Thousands of Out of Towners Feel We're 'Happy'

Can you see the happiness? If ever there were an inane list of cities that place well in inane lists -- San Francisco would, inanely, make a hell of a showing. And there's something seemingly even more inane than normal about the latest elite list the city has found itself on -- apparently, Disneyland be damned, we're the happiest place on earth. Or among the happiest, at least. Since this was a list complied for Forbes magazine, however, it's always worth a look. That's because the resea
