Here's some cool news for DJ and producers: music production software maker Ableton has teamed with electronic music institute Dubspot to present a series of interactive workshops utilizing Ableton's newest app, Live 8, and its dedicated controller, the Akai APC40.

The spells cast by Voodeux don't involve messy chicken blood or puncturing little dolls with big pins. In fact, the duo's minimal techno and house tracks trick your ears with how clean they can sound. The tiny crunches within the beats on "Just a Spoonful (edit)" are subtle as the sound of, say, chomping down on hard-shelled bugs--there's some grit and crackling in there, but overall these are smooth surfaces that warm into melodic galaxy raids as the tune travels into warped space. A plethora of local DJs are among the nominees for America's Best DJ, a DJ Times- sponsored competition whose closing party takes place September 12 at Rain nightclub (in the Palms casino) in Las Vegas. Who doesn't love sunsets, right? Especially in San Francisco, where things take on a pastel hue no matter the season. DJ Galen seems to dig sunsets a little more than most: he's planned huge parties for the past 15 years aimed, in part, at watching the sun go down and the dancefloor temperature rise.
