Los Angeles' abstract hip-hop maestro Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) has been getting all kinds of love from the press in 2008. The latest batch of glowing ink on the dude came from the New Yorker, where Sasha Frere-Jones waxes positively about Steven Ellison's passion for beats, weed, and beats that make you trip like weed. Jones also writes about the Flying Lotus remix of Radiohead's "Reckoner" (one of my favorite Radiohead tracks), which the writer explains, "doesn't remake 'Reckoner' so
DJ Centipede claims the distinct honor of having really brought down the dance floor. Literally. As the dude tells it, he was DJing a party in Oakland a decade back and the entire floor collapsed from people bouncing on it. Talk about dropping some bass.You can catch Centipede on Tuesdays (when he's giving funk from around the world an extra bit of grit at Madrone), or you can look for his alter ego Mophono (his electronic act that uses all live instrumentation) at other events around town. 
Lately I've been really getting into a new mix CD from DJ Alexander Nut for Rinse Records. The comp, simply titled Rinse:08, is an effortless blend of dubstep, grime, R&B, hip-hop, and abstractions of all of the above. Here you'll find Zombie down the way from Roots Manuva right after Flying Lotus. A sweet collection of headphone zone-outs and smooth club grooves. It's hard to pick a favorite, but there's something about New Yorker Marco Polo's "Relax" (feat. J*Davey) that's smooth as melted
