  • If it's Noon This Must be Vesuvio

By Matthew Stafford Last week I took it upon myself to show a visitor around San Francisco. The visitor in question, a New Zealander, was on the initial leg of a year-long circumnavigation of the globe, and as a native San Franciscan I wanted her to get home several months from now and say to herself, "Well, the canals of Venice were very nice, and that Great Wall was pretty impressive, but they couldn't compare to that focaccia place in North Beach." To that end I endeavored to show her ever

  • Morning Buzz: A Foodie Day Planner

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 Let's do lunch: SF Weekly food critic Meredith Brody recommends checking out the pelmeny and stuffed cabbage at Cinderella Bakery & Restaurant (436 Balboa near Sixth Ave.), 751-9690. Drink therapy: Nobody can drink like Aussies. And while they might know diddly about America's favorite pastime, the folks at down-under-themed South restaurant are certainly game: South's baseball season happy hour offers $5 bar bites and beers and $6 wines (even on non-game days), 3-6:

  • Boccalone Salumi Cycle Hits the Streets for Lunch Again Today

Chris Cosentino's tasty salted pig parts on the go.Stuck amongst all the numbers in FiDi and can't get down to the Ferry Building for lunch? Boccalone's Salumi Cycle will wheel over to the corner of California and Montgomery today at 12:30 to peddle salumi panini with tomato conserva and arugula ($7), Humphry Slocombe's lard shortbread cookies ($3), and Red Bull Natural Cola ($1) until they're all gone. Exact change is appreciated.

  • Fish Tacos, Green Wine, and a Mouthful of Smoke: A Foodie Day Planner

Tuesday, July 7, 2009 Let's do lunch: Check out the Tuesday farmers' market at Ferry Plaza, then get in line with the tourists and business types, says SF Weekly food critic Meredith Brody, for the fish tacos and a chocolate mint chip milkshake at Taylor's Automatic Refresher (One Ferry Building at The Embarcadero, 318-3423). Drink therapy: Meeting up for a first date? Make a good impression in a place that's cozy, eco-conscious, and more than a little brainy: Sip "green" wines (including hap

  • SFPD: River Rock Burglar Suspects Arrested

A pair of men police blame for a rash of smash 'n' grab robberies in the Chinatown/North Beach area were arrested early this morning by plainclothes officers. Nicknamed the "River Rock Burglar" because of his continued use of smooth, cobblestone-like rocks to smash store windows, the alleged thieves are accused of at least seven burglaries since early July. Police suspected a man who had been convicted of at least 13 similar "river rock burglaries" during two separate crime sprees over the

  • Zog's Dogs Not Exactly Artisan, but They Do Have a Zippy Sense of Humor

    M. Brody A kielbasa receives a squirt of mustard. Tucked behind the FiDi's One Post building (where Post, Market, and Montgomery meet) is Zog's Dogs, a new, bright yellow stand serving up an array of dogs and widely sourced sausages. Prices range from $3 for a corn dog to $6 for the Prop 8 Dog (two wieners snuggling in one bun). The quarter-pound sausages include hot links, spicy Italian Calabrese, bratwurst, lemon chicken, and low-fat turkey spiced with peppers and cilantro. M. B

  • Lost Weekend: A Tweet-Driven Bar Crawl through North Beach

bpfastball/FlickrFeel the swingin' swagger.Saturday was not only a typically crisp San Francisco midsummer's eve, it was birthday night, that special time of year when we wander the streets and alleys of North Beach in search of fun, frolic, and alcoholic stimulation. This year's celebration took advantage of modern technology for the first time: Tweeting was employed to guide followers from bar to bar, a breakthrough of, as it turned out, no significance whatsoever. Here's a pub-by-pub b

  • No Accident: We Crash Downtown 'Trauma' Shooting

If you thought the EMTs you saw downtown today were inordinately good-looking -- well, there's a reason for that. The new NBC show Trauma is filming today until 2 p.m. on Sansome between Pine and Sutter and Bush between Montgomery and Battery. The streets are blocked off to vehicle traffic, but pedestrians are free to wander through the set. (Well, on the sidewalk and designated cross walks. It's kind of hard to tell the Hollywood cops from the real ones, so jaywalking is not encouraged.) In fac

  • Morning Muni Delays Don't Bode Well For BART Strike

Jim HerdNot so fastWhile Muni spokesman Judson True was in and out of meetings this morning regarding the looming BART strike, a bevy of delayed Muni trains were making a helluva lot of passengers late for work. True explained that there was a problem with the control system at Montgomery station, which happens occasionally and causes significant rolling delays. "It's a challenge getting to it to fix it because of the morning commute," True said. "It's not a perfect picture."

Tuesday, September 1, 2009 Good enough for us: SF Weekly food critic Meredith Brody recently called the pulled lamb sandwich here "absolutely superb: moist hunks of meat, juices imbuing its crusty roll, with an unexpectedly delicious dipping side of watermelon vinegar." Get your own at Wexler's, 568 Sacramento (at Montgomery), 983-0102.

  • A Murder Most Foul: John Montgomery's Stabbing Death in Tenderloin Hotel Is City's 34th Homicide

View Larger MapThis has not been a good stretch for residents of Tenderloin hotels -- who never lead the easiest of lives. SF Weekly has written a bit about how an "ongoing dispute" between two tenants at the Rose Hotel led 50-year-old William Pious to walk into the room of his sleeping neighbor and douse the man in boiling cooking oil. That's more bizarre and eye-catching than the events half a mile down the road at the Vincent Hotel at 459 Turk Street -- but, to this point, less fatal. A man w

    M. BrodySomething tells us they'll run out long before the bridge reopens. So maybe Caltrans rushed it a little with that Labor Day fix. Forced onto BART with the teeming hordes? Emerge from your sardine can at Montgomery station, walk over to the little yellow stand huddled near the One Post Street building, and claim your prize. Until they run out, Zog's Dogs will be giving away a free Bay Bridge Dog -- broken in half! -- to anyone who shows a BART ticket. (Print out a coupon from the We
