Despite having a name that could set S.F.'s noise nerds in a tizzy, Australia's Drones are an indie rock band. But they're a damn good one, especially when frontman Gareth Liddiard is unwinding one of his heavily accented, highly tortured yowls over a mess of noisy guitar riffage. (Think an early, slightly less evil Nick Cave). But the man has mellowed slightly with newer releases, throwing some folksy jingles (and pop jangle) into the mix.
