Major suckage alert: There we were, all excited to capture on camera the epic battle that was bound to ensue between intergalactic pests and rogue cans of chicken noodle soup. But no, the characters from the Kaiju Universe will not be fighting it out at the Regency Center on Wednesday, Nov. 19th, as planned. Goldenvoice's Director of Marketing Joan Rosenberg tells us the bout's been canceled and refunds are available from wherever you bought the tix. Yes, we're bummed too. --Janine Kahn

  • Buckethead, YouTube Live! and Eddie Money: Your Weekend Hitlist

By Melissa Baron The sun finally came back out and with Thanksgiving on the way it's best to enjoy this weekend before inevitable family drama ensues. Here's what's going on: Friday night Sunlandic dance explosion Of Montreal play the Regency Center Grand Ballroom. For those of you who haven't seen them before, expect dancing, sweating, bright colors and possible nudity. Tickets are $25. There's also an incredible show in Redwood City (if you can get there): Buckethead brings his bizarre b

  • Friday Night: Of Montreal at the Regency Center

Of MontrealThe Regency Center (1290 Sutter St.)November 21, 2008Review by Ashley HarrellPhotos by Rachel Hubbard Of Montreal front man Kevin Barnes and his band of psychedelic indie poppers, who seemingly support an eternal Halloween, overheated San Francisco's Regency Grand Ballroom Friday night with yet another histrionic, sparkle-happy, and downright absurd performance. The overheating part was no joke. This show was so frenetic, the conditions so sweltering, that some audience members b

  • YouTube Live, No Pants Party and Of Montreal: Your Monday Morning Hangover

Weekend recap by Janine KahnThe bad news is, it's Monday. The good news? This is bound to be one short week! All Shook Down will likely be mostly crickets and echoes this Thursday and Friday as our crew heads out to spend time with their respective clans, so we overdid it this past weekend to make it up to you in advance. Here's what went down...On Friday, our Ashley Harrell witnessed the second coming of Jesus watched as Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes leaped out of a silver box hauled onto t

  • Dir en grey, Black Friday, Toys for Tots and Bazaar Bizarre: Your Monday Morning Hangover

Weekend wrap-up by Janine KahnSorry to shake you out of tryptophan-induced slothfulness, but it's Cyber Monday, kids. And that means you're supposed to blow what's left of the shopping dough you didn't honestly have last week on marginally-cheaper memory cards and online escorts or something. It's your duty to god and government! At least that's what we took away after running into these clever signs on Powell and Market streets last Friday (see above). See more photos from our Black Friday rom

Dir en grey, The Rose Trims Again TourThe Regency Center's Grand BallroomNovember 30, 2008Review and photos by Kirsty EvansBetter than: Just listening to the music on CD.In all the world of music it would be hard to find a more obsessive fanbase than Dir en grey's. Attendees started lining up at 7 p.m. the night before the show, braving both the cold November weather and the less-than-salubrious neighborhood armed only with sleeping bags and a few friends for moral support. Odd as it may seem,

  • Interview: Dir en grey's Shinya

By Kirsty Evans Late on a cold November afternoon I had the opportunity to sit down with Dir en grey drummer Shinya (pictured) for a quick interview a few hours before their show at The Regency Center. Since I had been told to expect the guitar duo rather than the usually reclusive drummer the following interview isn't quite as targeted as I would have liked, but Shinya turned out to be more talkative than previously advertised and we managed to cover a fair amount of ground. An odd man, perhap

The annual Edwardian Ball once again staged a fitting, San Francisco-style homage to the cartoon-Gothic writer and illustrator Edward Gorey with a riveting multimedia extravaganza of music, dance, video, art installations, and aerial acrobatics. • The Regency Center Gets "Gristlized" in April

Industrial music originators Throbbing Gristle have important historical links to San Francisco. Not only did the group's "last live performance" take place in S.F. -- at least before its 21st Century resurrection, that is -- but local friend/artist/agitator Monte Cazazza even came up with the phrase "industrial music" that would eventually name an entire genre. Yet Throbbing Gristle has not returned to the city since the 1981 farewell performance that was recorded on the Mission of Dead Souls

Rave Rising: Phoenix Raves are back. They're just not called raves anymore. Just take the just-announced Spectrum Festival, which promises a "bevy of live bands, DJs, performance artists and elaborate décor transforming the Regency Center into a multi-stage, multi-environment kaleidoscope of entertainment." Hmm. Kaleidoscope? Yup, sounds ravey, all right. Now, where's those parachute pants and glow-sticks? The two-night event, to be held June 26 and 27, will encompass all three floors of the

VAMPSJuly 25, 2009Regency CenterReview by Kirsty EvansBetter Than: A weekend vampire movie marathon. It was hard to tell what to expect from VAMPS before Saturday's show, as singer/guitarist Hyde (L'Arc en Ciel) and guitarist K.A.Z (Oblivion Dust) come from such different backgrounds. What kind of music would this collision of radio-friendly poppiness and straight-ahead rock spawn? Dirty sexy rock and roll, as it turns out. A little bit of punk, too, and the occasional nod to the so

  • Q&A with VAMPS' Hyde and K.A.Z.

VAMPS may well be the world's most unassuming supergroup. They consist of L'Arc En Ciel singer Hyde and guitarist K.A.Z, formerly of the (awesome, in my opinion) late 90s/early 2000s rockers Oblivion Dust. A superstar in Asia whose distinctive voice you'll certainly know if you're in the habit of watching anime or Japanese movies, Hyde is also an actor, having also starred in a pair of Japanese movies (as a slightly homoerotic vampire with yakuza buddies in "Moonchild" and a mysterious musici
