  • Vegan Eats: The Roman Bar's Chocolate-Dipped Honey-Peach Apricot Fruit Bar

San Rafael's Roman Bar (so named for its owner, Roman Starno) has a sweet, vegan treat with its chocolate-dipped fruit bars that were originally inspired by an experiment with chocolate and Fig Newtons in Starno's kitchen almost 20 years ago. A whole wheat pastry/cookie concoction liberally enrobed in dark chocolate and filled with blueberry or, in this case, honey-peach apricot, it does a good job with its flavors and, more importantly with vegan products, moist texture. It can be had for $1.

Paul Nave, a polite, well-spoken product of upscale Marin County, has climbed out of boxing obscurity to fight for a world title. He's a polished fighter, but he's probably going to get his ass kicked.

  • Cougars Ahoy! Women On the Prowl For Younger Men are Headed to San Francisco.

Daniel C. BrittDrool Brittania: British cougars Rita Sangha (left), 39, and Bea Cameron, 45, make nice to the camera during August's "National Cougar Convention" Do people complain to Rich Gosse about the use of the term "cougar" -- previously applied to a 1970s-era muscle car and, of course, a beast -- for older women with a yen for younger men? Yes. Yes they do. All the time. But he doesn't care. "We used to have cougar parties in San Francisco before the term 'cougar' was invented," says G

  • Fiorello's Caramel Balsamic Ice Cream Inspires A Certain Frantic Obsessiveness

It's like that.Maybe the rambling, effusive message we left on the San Rafael-based company's answering machine at 11 p.m. had a different effect than the one we intended. What else were we to do? We had questions to ask. A friend had brought over a stunningly good pint of caramel balsamic ice cream ($8 at Whole Foods), and our brains were caked in a sweet, slightly sour, and perfectly creamy Fiorello's film. We found a half-constructed Web site with a Sistine Chapel motif and no helpful
