  • A Most Eloquent Vandal: A (Depressing) Sign of the Times on the T-Line

In a dour sign of the era, an unknown vandal -- who obviously knows how to sling together a few nouns and verbs -- has absolutely put San Francisco State's ad wizards in clown suits with a few deft marks of his pen. You can click on the image for a large version of this top-notch bit of social commentary/graffiti. Keep in mind that the sloppy purple "ink" is part of the ad, while the sloppy black ink was scrawled by our most eloquent rapscallion. -- Joe Eskenazi

  • Gavin's Catholic Bashing

By Lauren Smiley Is Mayor Newsom a self-hating Catholic? The Catholic League said this week that the Mayor (and the Board of Supervisors) should be blamed for vandals scrawling the names of the pope and the San Francisco archbishop next to a Nazi symbol on Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in the Castro. Why? Because he doesn't do anything to stop such Catholic-offending acts like naked dudes running amok at the Folsom Street Fair, of course. Here's the statement of Catholic League preside

  • Congrats, Vandal: No Matter How Hard Advertisers Try, There's Always a Cleverer Jackass

Yes, this is more fun than the ad's original content. This minor masterwork, spotted at a bus shelter on the corner of 16th and Mission, proves a tidy little point. Just as Belloq told Indiana Jones that "there is nothing you can possess which I cannot take away," Some anonymous vandal has, in essence, told the advertising stiff "There is nothing you can shill that I cannot transform into an article of filth." Incidentally, the "Of" pictured above was part of a larger ad. We honestly can't reme

  • S.F. State Ad Featuring Man Writing on Wall Popular Target For Folks Who Like to Write on Walls

Makes you wonder just what they mean by "extended learning"A little while back, we noted that a Muni ad for San Francisco State's extended learning program had been hit by a most eloquent vandal whose penwork was almost indistinguishable from the text. The above shot, also from the T-Line, reveals that this is a popular target for vandals -- though this fellow isn't quite as eloquent as the last we caught defacing this ad (as always, you can click on the photo for a larger version). By the way,

  • I Heart Street Art: Murals Vs. Graffiti

At that panel discussion last week, one of the things that came up was the idea that murals help curb vandalism. Conventional wisdom says even the most callous of vandals wouldn't dare deface the art of another artist. Therefore, the more murals you have, the less graffiti you have. One panelist even said the recent graffiti explosion correlates directly to the recent decline in funding for mural projects.Problem is, it looks like maybe the conventional wisdom is wrong. Murals all over the Miss

  • Muni Drivers: Thefts of Jackets, Other Possessions Happen All the Time

'Hey, that's my jacket...'We reported last week on a series of incidents in which miscreants vandalizing Muni vehicles on Mission and Silver distracted the drivers -- who returned to their seats to find that someone had stolen their jackets. Muni spokesman Judson True said that any news of theft of drivers' apparel was a "new one" to him, and the Transportation Workers Union did not return multiple calls. So, yours truly hopped on several buses on Mission and Silver yesterday and asked the dr

  • I Heart Street Art: Felony Vandalism and Conspiracy

Earlier this summer an edition of the SFPD's Richmond Station Newsletter was devoted to recent graffiti-related arrests. Today I am going to reprint portions of it and couple these portions with photos of graffiti in the vicinities of Clement Street and Geary Boulevard taken by (because I don't even know where the Richmond is) Flickr photographer caffeina. From Captain Richard Corriea:On June 8, 2009 at 2:00 AM Officers were dispatched to 11th Avenue and Clement Street on a call of two sus

  • Nooooooooooooooo! Vandal Defiles Mr. Burbujas.

Mr.Burbuja's Laundromat, located on the corner of 24th Street and Florida, is home to one of the weirdest and most unexpected pieces of artwork on the popular shopping corridor. The building's side boasts a painting of the business's namesake, an anthropomorphic washing machine who is way stoked on getting his basket of clothes clean. (This publication granted the painting "Best Laundromat Mural" in the 2009 Best Of issue.) But recently Mr.Burbujas isn't half the "man" he used to be. Literall

  • Woman Accused of Vandalizing Car -- With Dog

'What a world, what a world'Truth be told, there are more effective ways of vandalizing a car -- via a can of spray paint or a chisel to name a couple. But employing man's best friend as a means of inflicting damage upon a vehicle -- now that earns some style points. On Sunday evening, a pair of San Francisco police officers headed to the intersection of Kelloch and Velasco to investigate allegations of automobile vandalism. Instead they got a shaggy dog story of sorts.
