AlunaGeorge: Show Preview

Now comes the part where we confess our sluttiness for '90s R&B — and current acts that, however unconsciously, conjure its elements: skittering, spacey beats, damp synth textures, and sultry female vocals. The two Brits behind AlunaGeorge tried fighting the influence of Timbaland and the Neptunes for a long time, but eventually gave up. And while it's not quite fair to say that George Reid and Aluna Francis are merely copying the sounds of two decades ago — the beats and textures on debut album Body Music are as much postmillennial London as Clinton-era Virginia Beach — the signature is certainly there. Most importantly, however, songs like "Attracting Flies" and the breakout single "You Know You Like It" crackle with a confident, kinetic energy and a sense of spaciousness that grab attention even before you get to the lovely sheen of Francis' singing. So let's forget the past — AlunaGeorge sounds good right freaking now.
