Shake Shake Shake

If it's dancing girls you want, or if it's a dancing girl you are, Baxtalo Drom is your jam. Deep, deep in the steampunk jungle, this belly-dance-flavored club is rife with old-timey aesthetics, exposed tattooage, and feathers in hairdos. The evening is organized by the very pretty women of Sister Kate, a shimmying troupe with extensive costume options and roots in the local-famous tribal fusion belly-dance scene (meaning: several of these ladies were in the desperately beloved Ultra Gypsy, sadly disbanded), with help from fellow UG OG Rose Harden. The name, Romani for "the lucky road" or "the road of dreams," reminds us of Latcho Drom, a documentary about itinerant Romani, or as they're called, Gypsy, families and their music. And indeed, Baxtalo Drom's musical selections draw from a wide range of influences, including Middle Eastern, Balkan, Slavic, rock, punk, vaudeville, and more, appropriate to its nationless, inclusive, raucous forbears.
