"Mighty Breaks" slathers on the hi-NRG beats; "Shadowplay" hopes to be the Stud's new Friday hot spot

Under the 101 and 80 freeways is where it's at this Friday night, and that's in addition to the sweet bags of smack you can score beneath the onramps. Mighty's "Mighty Breaks" features just what its name suggests, the kind of powerful breakbeats that have come to dominate most of the city's nightspots and dance floors. DJs Barefoot, Syd Gris, Hoj, J Miah, Reid Oda, Jeff Richmond, Smoove, and special guest Ethan Miller spin in two rooms on a night that will go well into the wee hours. This is also a postSt. Patrick's Day celebration, where the Irish booze (Jameson's, Bushmills, Baileys, et al.) is a scant $3, so drink up; call 626-7001 or visit www.mighty119.com.

Fridays at the Stud have hosted club nights over the past year that, for one reason or another, just didn't stick. Now the creative folks who brought you Lit's long-running "Vanguard" have moved into the slippery vacancy with their new night, "Shadowplay." And the odds of success, it seems, are in their favor: While DJ Donimo and weekly guest DJs spin immortal electro, disco-punk, and punk hits from the past, you can also hear the sounds of today's groove-worthy indie beats (think people in black dancing to Franz Ferdinand). This contrast, thankfully, keeps away any irritating retro vibe. And finally (because this kind of thing is almost always a touchy issue amongst friends deciding where to head out for the evening), "Shadowplay" is a wall-to-wall mixed bag of sexual preferences and genders; call 252-7883 or visit www.shadowplaysf.com for more info.
