Best Thing Made from Ice Cream

The Ice Cream Bar's New Orleans Hangover

While it may seem that Cole Valley's Ice Cream Bar has the Art Deco soda fountain aesthetic nailed, the malts and shakes themselves involve a kind of 19th century patent medicine. (Coca-Cola started out as a curative, after all.) The New Orleans Hangover — chicory coffee syrup, soda, Golden Eagle tincture and sweet cream ice cream — may not involve quite the alchemy of the Ice Cream Bar's phosphates and lactarts, but it's the perfect balance of rich sweetness and bite. It's like something your grandfather might dimly remember being served on a zeppelin in some alternative version of the Forties.
