Break It Down

Founded in 1999 by Elmaz Abinader, Junot Díaz, Victor Díaz, and Diem Jones, Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation produces an annual Berkeley-based workshop week focused on the development of emerging writers of color. Not limited to any one genre, the workshops are taught by established writers of color and have become widely renowned for the breadth and depth of the work they've facilitated. The first anthology from these workshops, Dismantle, has just been published; it features more than 50 contributors and sets work by Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners beside work by first-time-published authors. To celebrate, a stout cast of talent will read: Abinader, Faith Adiele, Sharline Chiang, David Maduli, Roopa Ramamoorthi, Kenji C. Liu, and Marissa Johnson-Valenzuela. KPFA will add to the electricity of that lineup by taping and airing the show live. There's even an after party at Luka's in Oakland.
