Calling Out Around the World

The members of the high-energy Duniya Drum and Dance Company were probably sitting around one day, thinking: We need more room. And then someone walked into the former 12 Galaxies space, looked around, and smiled. At the new monthly event, Duniya Dancehall, the company's traditional-yet-aerobics-like Bollywood style is a perfect fit for the cavernous Mission District bar. Combining jolts of gorgeous, hyperactive live performance with sets by dancehall, African, reggae, and other DJs (organized by Stronghold Sound) means you watch, you dance. You watch, you dance. It's a relatively new kind of night out — more serious about culture than a regular club night, but more fun than just sitting there and watching other dancers. The company promises lots of its signature combination: deep-rooted, joyful traditional music and dance from India, West Africa, Jamaica, Latin America, and beyond — which takes up a lot of room, but there's plenty left for you.
