Christ! Mas

Wednesday, Dec 9 2009
Christmas music sucks. Most of it is saccharine, faux-pious, emotionally manipulative crap, recorded embalmingly. To the rescue is local blues and jazz singer Kim Nalley, who's famous for three things: a great voice, a pretty face, and a dirty mind. If anyone can warm up the holiday chestnuts, it's her. At the Kim Nalley Christmas Gospel show, don't expect outright blasphemy — not her style — but the woman who can make going to the dentist sexy (her song "Long John" is full of "drilling") probably has her way with carols, too. Her idols are Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday, and her three-and-a-half-octave range and commanding stage presence mean she has the chops to deliver on the promise of those big names. Plus, maybe she'll sing "When He Came."
