Christie Front Drive: Show Preview

Wednesday, Feb 22 2012

Emo today might not be the constantly maligned buzzword it was a few years back (dubstep has filled that role), but it's still comforting to be reminded of the genre's original sound — the good stuff that preceded the overwrought songwriting, the Link-from-Zelda haircuts, and the blood-and-hearts imagery splattered across Hot Topic. Christie Front Drive typifies the concept of dewy-eyed emo even as the group's original run (1993 to 1996) produced only one full-length and a few scattered songs. The Denver four-piece consistently used a handful of elements: short song titles ("Fin," "Coda," "Radio"); taking-their-sweet-time crescendos that wore sullen, earnest smiles; and vocals delivered as if a wallflower had finally decided to spill his guts. After drifting between no-name bands, the players of Christie regrouped in 2007, playing again every once in a while. No new material has emerged yet, but if it does, it'll likely exhilarate and bum you out with equal force.
