Concert preview: Spoon

Spoon's seventh album, Transference, is disheveled even by the band's own standards. Britt Daniel's sawed-off voice cracks and catches as the instruments lash out in repeated, penetrating jags of Stones-learnt attitude. The long-trucking quartet has flayed nearly all the frills from the songs, relying on stops, starts, and sudden exits to tease our attention. There's also the lure of tight-knit interplay and fragmented imagery, which few bands bring off so well. Lean and almost incidentally soulful, Spoon has snatched the idea of rock cool from the jaws of bombast and run with it.
