CopperWire: Show Preview

Wednesday, May 2 2012

Ethiopian born, S.F.-based singer Meklit Hadero is known for a couple of things: She has voice like crushed velvet, brings her jazz-influenced band on tour in her native country, and is a senior fellow at the highly regarded TED Institute. She wasn't previously known for being a rapper, but that could change: Hadero just released an "Ethiopian hip-hop space opera" as part of a trio called CopperWire. Earthbound, the group's debut, is more than a novelty project: It's an adventurous and refreshing take on pairing beats and rhymes, with ribbons of Hadero's warm, powerful vocals weaved throughout. The two other members, Gabriel Teodros and Ellias "Burntface" Fullmore, handle much of the emceeing, but Hadero's singing on tracks like the standout "Phone Home" helps make this unexpected collaboration a success.
