Dancing of a White Christmas

Wednesday, Dec 24 2008
It may be the "Cool Christmas," but don't worry, it's still ballet, all the way. "Graceful men lift lovely girls in white," as the song goes. (The song being "At the Ballet" from A Chorus Line. If you didn't already know that, you're probably a straight male football fan under 50.) At Smuin: The Christmas Ballet, the evening is divided in two parts: "Classical Christmas" and the aforementioned "Cool" one. The former has everything you'd want from the choreography of Smuin, the late former San Francisco Ballet maven, and the latter has Elvis Presley and feather boas. But it all has pointe shoes on the gals and tights on the boys –- except for the part with the tap-dancing Christmas trees! It's all completely delightful, too, if you can believe 14 years' worth of dedicated fans. Kids, especially, are routinely taken in by this Bay Area holiday tradition.
