Drywall Run

Wednesday, Apr 2 2008
The YouTube video promoting Lucy McLauchlan's new exhibit reveals she was born to make art, attacking walls instead of hedging her bets with disposable canvases. The artist appears in an all-white room, paint bucket in hand, and as a band plays she lays down thick black lines with a fast, confident hand. We end up with four walls and a ceiling drenched with her dense, mural-like work, full of leaves, faces, and swirling, repeating shapes in stark black and white. Her style is eclectic — a touch of art deco, a little street, plenty of psychedelia, and a lot of cartoon, which all flow together as happily as the many faces hidden in the hair of her signature young women. The painter has been on a rock-solid run of international shows over the past seven years, displaying paintings and prints when not going right at the drywall. Her new exhibit, "Lucy McLauchlan's New Collection of Paintings," shares billing with graffiti artist Slick's exhibit, "Ceci n'est pas Graffiti."
