Galactic: Show Preview

Wednesday, Mar 28 2012

Galactic is delightfully overwhelming, both in substance and style. The New Orleans jazz-funk fivesome cops from infectious genres: hip-hop, bounce, R&B. It reminds one of E. Annie Proulx's Accordion Crimes, and a passage detailing the music of late 19th century NOLA: "An apron of sound lapped out of each dive." On new release Carnivale Electricos, that apron of sound is threaded with Brazilian samba and New Orleans styles like zydeco. On previous albums like Ruckus or Ya-Ka-May, the grooves were like explosives with lengthy fuses: They burned for a time, then burst. Carnivale is a 40-minute carpet bombing.
