Gettin' Super Heavy on a Thursday night

Every fourth Thursday, the sound system at the Madrone Lounge serves up confectionary indie rock with sides of dancefloor sweets. Super Heavy Duty DJs are fans of alt rock's top of the pops (Kasabian, the Subways) with crossover club hitters like MSTRKRFT and CSS. And while the Madrone may be cozy, it still offers enough space to stretch your legs to the beats, should the mood — and the booze — strike you right. Things get Super Heavy Duty on Thursday, Sept. 28, at Madrone Lounge at 9 p.m. Admission is $4; call 241-0202 or visit for more info. — Jennifer Maerz

S.F.'s Rhapsodistas kick wry, laid-back rhymes over familiar beats. "Foe One Five on It" is a shout out for local pride over the Bay Area stoner classic "I Got Five on It" by the Luniz; who else boasts about there being an entrance fee (bridge toll) to enter their city? These four fly girls join DJs Zita, Solace, and Justin Time for an evening of "Familia Faces" on Friday, Sept. 29, at Milk at 9 p.m. Admission is $5 (before 11)/$10; call 387-6455 or visit for more info. — Tamara Palmer

Local promoter True Skool brings a night of spiritually charged lyricism with Lord Jamar and Sadat X, two-thirds of hip-hop group Brand Nubian. Catalog greats like "Slow Down" or "Punks Jump Up" might join more recent efforts from Jamar, who recently released the solo effort The 5% Album, and the group itself, whose last album Fire in the Hole was released in 2004. DJs Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist, Chicken Skratch, and Daze round out the party on Friday, Sept. 29, at Poleng Lounge at 9 p.m. Admission is $10; call 441-1710 or visit for more info. — T.P.
