Ghouls' Night Out

Wednesday, Oct 13 2010
The website of North Beach's San Remo Hotel makes no mention of the occupant of room 33 ― could be because the hotel used to be a brothel and 33 was the madam’s room. More likely because the madam is a ghost. The site also fails to mention the little girl often seen roaming the halls, but if you book room 42, expect to spend the night waiting for the cute spirit to rattle your doorknob. We like to think a night at the Remo is like a Halloween episode of Scooby-Doo. It’s one of a handful of local sites that regularly lure the paranormal elite, including our own S.F. Ghost Society, which descends on the property for the seven-hour fearfest Ghosts of San Francisco. After dinner at the downstairs Fior D'Italia, the group presents evidence of Bay Area hauntings with legendary ghoster Janice Oberding, ghost author Jeff Dwyer, and assorted ghost hunters and aficionados. It also presides over a tour of the premises, which contains a few "enhanced" spooks in case madam is otherwise indisposed for the evening.
