For the first time in its almost 50 years as one of San Francisco’s most beloved bookstores, Green Apple Books recently opened a second location. Not that you need a new book by Haruki Murakami to get you into the new store, but if you’re a fan of either Green Apple or of the author, then this week might peak for you tonight. Murakami’s new book is Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki, which has been so highly anticipated it sold more than a million copies in its first week in Japan. True to form, Green Apple has organized a late night celebration with food and beer, a Murakami trivia contest written by Murakami scholar Matthew Strecher, a raffle for signed first editions of Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki, and a costume party, for which you’re encouraged to dress up as your favorite Murakami character. Such special events are only one of the reasons Green Apple was recently named Publishers Weekly’s Bookstore of the Year; to discover some of the others is as easy as joining the party.
