Light It Up

Wednesday, Jul 29 2009
It’s percolating. Downtown’s old, old brick temple to money is gathering steam, preparing itself to be viewed, like Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, readying itself for its close-up: It’s scheduled to be a sort of Bay Area history community center with cafes, museums, and a roof garden — someday. But you can get a sneak peek in the interim at “Traveling Light,” a site-specific performance installation. Having collaborated with Jack Carpenter and Jay Cloidt on lighting and sound design — neither of which is easy in a stone cavern of dubious wiring status — the Joe Goode dance company presents a characteristically philosophical evening. Meditating athletically on materialism, international border issues, and sustainability, the dancers use the building’s dimensions to comment on the questions we all face. What do we need? What can we give up? What is success? Pre-show vault tours prepare you to answer.
