Mykki Blanco: Show Preview

Wednesday, Jun 26 2013

"Hell is chilly, motherfucker": So begins "The Initiation," Mykki Blanco's new single from Betty Bubble: The Initiation. It's lurky, pitch-black hip-hop; a repetitive, two-chorus mantra more than a rap song. In the video Blanco is literally two-faced and bestial, crawling on all fours through Manhattan alleyways and chanting in Latin: Carpe Noctem; Deo Vindice; Deo Confidimus. Not the Anti-Christ toting you'd expect from an up-and-coming female rapper or a young New York City stylista. But that's Mykki Blanco, and that's just an appetizer. Blanco, named for Lil Kim's alter ego Kimmy Blanco, is Michael Quattlebaum Jr.'s inverted cross. He's also held titles like author, photographer, playwright, and Indie Spirit Award-winner — and that was all before her rap career. Hear a tune like "Ace Bougie Chick" and it's hard to believe Blanco's only been rapping for a couple years. Like Biggie with Lil Kim lisp, it's laid-back and vitriolic; a complete other side to an artist for whom versatility and showmanship are the medium.
