Not Only in San Francisco

Wednesday, Jun 1 2011
The world owes queer women of color a huge debt of gratitude: Wanda Sykes alone ought to cause worldwide automatic worship. Because where the hell would we be without Wanda Sykes? But the automatic-worship thing hasn’t happened yet, so let’s talk about it and watch some movies. The Queer Women of Color Film Festival has 38 new films, an amazing panel discussion, and a focus on Vietnamese-American filmmakers. The talk (Thinkers & Troublemakers, June 11 at 1 p.m.) features a Black Panther; someone who spent time in Chilean prison in the 1970s; the divine Jewelle Gomez; and a Kenyan-born South Asian woman who makes “sexy films about social justice.” Commence worldwide automatic worship! Or at least, as Truc Thanh Nguyen’s film Help Wanted points out, a fair chance at a crappy job.
