Not That Kind of Cheek-Slapping

Wednesday, Oct 23 2013

Do you have music in your body? Not just hiccups or intestinal swish or the gulp in your throat when you swallow — we mean the toe-tapping, the heel-stomping, the thigh-slapping, the hollow drum of taut cheeks played right. The Sixth International Body Music Festival comes to the Bay Area Nov. 5-10, with workshops, jam sessions, open mics, concerts, and dance parties all day long on both sides of the bay. Highlights include Nov. 9's Hambone Summit at the SFJAZZ Center, a family matinee featuring the black historical body music created by slapping the thighs and chest. The festival's opening event is a free outdoor performance scored by Body Tjak 13 on Oakland's West Grand Avenue, near the 19th St. BART station, combining the musical talents of Oakland's Corposonic, Sao Paolo's Barbatuques, Bali's Cudamani, and San Francisco's aerial dance troupe Bandaloop.
