Omara "Bombino" Moctar: Show Preview

Following in the footsteps of pioneering Saharan band Tinariwen and the late Malian six-string virtuoso Ali Farka Touré, Nigerian guitarist Omara "Bombino" Moctar has risen in a few short years from living in exile to being one of the leading lights of African music. A member of the oft-persecuted nomadic Tuareg people, Bombino ignored a government prohibition against playing his tribe's rebel music to develop a hypnotic style that intertwines traditional sounds with slow-burning blues riffs that recall Jimi Hendrix and Dire Straits maestro Mark Knopfler. While the songs on his Cumbancha Records release Agadez provide ample display of Bombino's soaring fretwork, the guitarist will likely deliver a raw, otherworldly intensity when he takes the stage at Mezzanine on Friday, Dec. 9. 9 p.m., $17.
