Phosphorescent: Show Preview

Wednesday, Sep 25 2013

Gorgeous, heartbreaking, resplendent — one can come up with a lot of words to describe Phosphorescent's forward-looking Americana, and one is constantly inspired to. The songs on Matthew Houk's latest album, Muchacho, come slathered in bar-room pianos, moaning lap-steel guitars, wistful brass solos, and trembling vocals. But it's not all just prettiness: Houk's as good a storyteller as he is a producer, and the songs here ring with careful lyrics and piercing images. Most of them are sad, but they're all the more pretty for it. Seeing them expertly performed in the gleaming cathedral that is the Fillmore should be quite a treat.
