To many San Diegans, Rocket from the Crypt was the city's last rock 'n' roll band that mattered. A visceral live outfit founded in 1989, RFTC restored primacy to the guitar riff, then reclaimed the swagger of horns during its creative peak in the mid-'90s. Outlandish live antics, relentless EP releases, and free concert admission for anyone with an RFTC tattoo garnered a devout fan base internationally, until bandleader John Reis' involvement with acts like The Sultans and Hot Snakes led to its breakup in 2005. A radio DJ, club owner, record label operator, and leader of the Night Marchers in San Diego today, Reis' projects have only diversified since Rocket from the Crypt. But his most prominent group's reunion begs the question: Is our tattoo still valid?
