SFCD Summer Dance Series: Program 2 & Sonorous Figures

When: July 28-30, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $5-$10 suggested donation

Inspiration is a tetchy thing, fleeing when pursued, coy with attempts at seduction, and when the mood strikes, a brazen hussy in highest heat — at least, so the legend goes. As experience would indicate, there is also the quieter flame of steady work that builds creations step by step. For dancers, this comes with the practice of daily class: the exercise of realigning the body with the present world moment by moment, once again. It is therefore no surprise that the partnership formed between choreographer Christian Burns and musician Donald White emerged through the consistent collaboration of ballet teacher and accompanist. In Sonorous Figures, presented as part of the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance's Fifth Annual Summer Dance Series, Burns and White explore the story of a fallen muse rediscovering inspiration using images from American classics, including The Grapes of Wrath, paintings by Edward Hopper, and photographs by Dorothea Lang.
