Twofish Baking Company: The Best Sticky Buns on the Block

If you get to Twofish Bakery's new digs on Ritch Street in SOMA too late in the afternoon, you may be confronted with a patchwork of little Post-its on its menu board telling you that basically everything is sold out but pastries. (At least if you're there on a sunny day; I was told that selling out like that was a rarity.) If making lemons into lemonade is not applicable, make stickies into sticky buns.

Based in Sea Ranch, Twofish is sure to please lots of people. Slow-cavores will like that a loaf of bread takes three days from start to finish. Traditionalists who hunger for Linzer tarts will find them. And avid calorie-burners always in search of a better energy bar have got one. Its bars are made with raw organic cashew butter warmed with honey to "a molten boil," then hand mixed with roasted hazelnuts, toasted oats, cherries, cinnamon, and seeds. And the lunch crowd can choose from a number of salads and calzones, even a vegan one with artichoke hearts.

But back to that decidedly unhealthful sticky bun. It was nutty and aromatic, with just the right amount of glaze; the perfect afternoon treat. And the vibe is cute, too, with impish signs, friendly faces, and Equator Coffee. It took more than 10 years to get here from Sonoma, but bread pudding's days are numbered as the reigning indulgence of our times.
