What Drives Women

Wednesday, Jan 28 2009
It's the old self-determination thing: At Women, Islam, and the West, two academics make the point that gee, maybe women in Muslim communities should get a say about what makes them free or unfree. Whaa? Why do women always get like that? Self-determination, equal pay, it just goes on and on ... Columbia professor of Anthropology and Gender Studies Lila Abu-Lughod works on ethnographic writing about women in Egypt, and at the moment she's writing a book about how people around the world imagine Muslim women's rights. Saba Mahmood, a UC Berkeley Anthropologist, is a theory-head and a multidisciplinarian, having studied architecture and political science before writing the award-winning book Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject.
