Wong Is the Loneliest Number

Wednesday, Nov 2 2011
Kristina Wong broke her own heart via four years of touring her one-woman show about depression. It was called Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and it took on the high incidence of suicide among Asian American women. Apparently, that’s the kind of torture it takes for an attractive woman to feel a kinship with men in the “pick-up artist” scene. You know, where men teach each other that “listening to her” is a sneaky, manipulative way to get sex? Because Wong is a stone cold artist, this odd connection became a new play, Cat Lady. Pretty sure she’s making the point that the (supposed?) sadness of a cat lady is matched only by the (real) sadness of the pickers-up. However, the play also ends racism, hangs out between genders, and is very, very funny.
