Writing Wrongs

Wednesday, Mar 28 2012
At Regreturature, well-known writers read their worst — as the name suggests, it’s the stuff they regret. This is a very good and charitable idea, with impressively bylined writers letting everyone know that they once impressively sucked. Perhaps they made the same mistakes as you, thinking every verb needed an adverb, and that punctuation was for tools. Maybe they thought they really were pulling off stream-of-consciousness or first-person plural — we think that all the time — or that they suddenly just got stream of consciousness after courting the muse with a bottle of Jack the night before a New Yorker deadline. Who knows? The lineup makes us deadly curious, with Katie Crouch, James Nestor, Caroline Paul, and Mary Roach, among others, but we’re most excited about Rumpus editor Isaac Fitzgerald. Given his hard-charging, high-wire persona on Twitter, full of two-fisted drinking and knife-throwing in the service of literature (softened by periodic hugging and man-crying), we can’t imagine what he might — well, he’ll probably just read that Twitter feed.
