Some people might consider it cruel to carry your best friends in a briefcase — even a well-padded one — and to only let them out in 24-minute increments. But not Gabbaland's DJ Lance Rock. He's totally down with carting around wide-eyed and rhythm-driven Muno, Foofa, Brobee, Toodee, and Plex, who transform from toys to both live action and animated playpals once their sweet box of edutainment is cracked open. A Dadaist hit program on the Nick Jr. channel, Yo Gabba Gabba! picks up where Sesame Street and The Muppet Show first staked claims, casting musicians (mostly of the indie persuasion) to perform in skits, as well as regular segments such as Biz Markie's "Beat of the Day" and "Mark's Magic Pictures," featuring Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. Lessons taught can be "traditional," such as the importance of mastering daily skills, celebrating unique talents, or just playing politely with others — but they're packaged in a hallucinogenic audio-video skin that makes the Teletubbies look like Barney. Do you consider shampooing to be a magical experience? Well, in the show's live presentation, you can shout "Yes!" while doing a public dance without sounding like you're actually advertising some lather-rich herbal shower experience.
